We blend the expertise of a multidisciplinary team of care-coordinators, clinicians, specialists, educators and counsellors and engage with our external partners to create a custom care plan that is suited specifically for the complex needs of that person’s story. This is Integrated Care. And it means working together as a community to address the big picture of building resilience so we can improve outcomes for Calgarians for generations to come.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Continuing services for those who needed it most. On March 11, 2020, CUPS began a comprehensive crisis response to the Coronavirus pandemic with staff working around the clock to ensure there wasn’t a gap in support services for those who needed it most. Our health team worked in collaboration with many community partners, including The Alex, Calgary Homeless Foundation, Alberta Health Services, HomeSpace and the Government of Alberta, to operate a self-isolation site for the city’s vulnerable population. Our teaching staff at the Child Development Centre immediately transitioned to virtual classrooms, without missing a day. Our health professionals kept CUPS’ clinics open for urgent needs, while other care was provided online. All family programming shifted to a virtual format, allowing continuous engagement from participants We have learned new ways to connect with clients and many of those methods will be maintained as we move forward through 2020 and onward.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Client Stories - Meet Dalila</image:title>
<image:caption>There is a monumental cultural shift that takes place when you move countries. When Dalila and her young daughters moved from Brazil to Calgary, she needed to find social supports that would help her little family find a solid footing for their new life. Enrolling her girls at the CUPS Child Development Centre turned out to be the core of that foundation. With one daughter in preschool and one in kindergarten, they were immersed into a program that uses brain science principles to support building resilience for life. Not only are her daughters more engaged in school, they have become more connected as a family, too.</image:caption>

He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. <image:caption>Knowing what you want and not being able to get your hands on it can be incredibly frustrating. It’s right there in front of you, but you can’t grasp it. That’s every day for Jon. He knows what he needs to succeed: supportive housing. Resilient, but vulnerable, Jon has been engaged with CUPS for a very long time. In addition to seeing a counsellor and physician at CUPS, his care coordinator also checks in once or twice a week to keep him present and engaged so he feels heard and supported. CUPS has worked in partnership with Alpha House to ensure he’s safe at night and continues to advocate for Jon to get into subsidized housing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Imagine being a teenager, pregnant and alone trying to face the world. For Carmen, this is her reality. Instead of playing soccer with friends and trying out new hair styles, she’s struggling to find somewhere safe to live. Carmen was couch surfing and had nowhere for her and her baby to call home. Working with the Highbanks Society, CUPS has helped her achieve a basic necessity: a roof over her head. Carmen has not only been accepted into their housing program, but her eagerness to finish school has her enrolled in the Never Too Late GED program, a CUPS partnership with Catholic Family Service. Carmen is also getting a jump on parenting classes through the Nurturing Parenting program, learning how to properly care for her baby and raise a strong and confident child. Carmen is building a foundation of resilience for the future with each and every step she makes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Letter from Executive - To our partners and supporters,</image:title>
<image:caption>In what has been an unprecedented year for us all, we are deeply grateful for the support of those who choose to walk with us alongside our city’s most vulnerable citizens. In light of the continued human and financial toll of the COVID-19 pandemic, the power of community has never been stronger, and we look back on this last year inspired by your commitment and generosity. We were just wrapping up the fiscal year when the crisis hit and we quickly had to find new ways to support clients with their immediate needs. But in doing so, we never lost sight of our goal to provide integrated care – seamless support across CUPS and across agencies to help people build resiliency in all areas of their life, so they can move forward better equipped to handle adversity when it happens. Disaster comes in many forms and the pandemic has much to teach us about the need to become more resilient. This year, more than 9,000 Calgarians came to us seeking help. Each one is offered access to a care coordinator who will take them through the CUPS Resilience Assessment Tool. This process allows us to map out a person’s current state and have a discussion around care options to tailor a plan that is right for them. As we move more and more people through this intake process, we’re able to track progress, make changes as needed and report better on our impact. Through the COVID crisis, you answered our call for support through the CUPS COVID-19 Fund. You enabled us to pivot our operations, mitigate risks and continue serving those who needed our care. While we’ve never seen anything like this before, historically, we know that the hardest hit by any developing crisis are those who are already well entrenched in one of their own. Because of that, your support has been more important than ever. As we grow in awareness of social-injustices, experience new economic disruptions and face increasing instability, your support will allow us to learn, react and respond, evolving our operations so we can continue to effectively understand and address the unique challenges of each client. We recognize the opportunity to extend resilience beyond poverty and trauma. We can apply a brain science, trauma-informed approach to building the resilience of our entire community against inequality, discrimination and vulnerability. With your support, we are determined to bring transformational change in thinking, policy, infrastructure and everyday practice so our community can adapt and flourish. You are part of this important movement. CUPS isn’t simply solving problems, but remains committed to leading the way toward creating lasting, positive change. The pandemic has emphasized this need more than ever, and despite our best efforts now, we know that the future will bring additional challenges. We look ahead with optimism knowing we have the support of individuals like you to help us get there. On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers, thank you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ann's Story - Meet our Bruce Covernton Community Service Award Recipient (2020)</image:title>
<image:caption>Ann Bright Ann Bright has always felt it’s important to give back to the community, which is why she started at CUPS more than 20 years ago as a volunteer receptionist. Several years later, she learned more about the need for essential items for new moms and Ann rapidly became known as the Baby Bundle Lady. Through her own network and connections, Ann has collected thousands of dollars of essential baby items — from toiletries to nursing supplies, handmade baby blankets, newborn diapers, baby clothes and more. Ann and her family have also purchased items out of their own pocket to ensure the baby bundle has everything it needs to support a young mother. Preparing to become a mother can be an overwhelming time, and even more so if you’re a young mother without a solid support system. Taking care of yourself may be a challenge on it’s own; how do you care for a tiny human as well? Ann recognized this and it inspired her to continue to work with her church and other companies to create thoughtful packages of essentials. Being able to sit down with the young mothers and let them know they will receive a baby bundle keeps her motivated and determined to maintain this important work as long as she can. For this and so many other reasons, CUPS is proud to recognize Ann with the Bruce Covernton Community Service Award for 2020.</image:caption>
